Cobram Estate Olive Harvest 2019, aka Poppy’s First Flight!

Poppy took her first flight two weeks ago and I will admit, I WAS SO NERVOUS. One, I was nervous to fly just in general. Two, I had no idea how Poppy would act 37,000 feet in the air. Poppy is a superstar because she was so good! I couldn’t believe it. Or maybe I can because she truly is a gem here on the ground so why wouldn’t she be up in the air? I’m thankful the flight went well because we had a full day of Cobram Estate Olive Oil adventuring to do!

Processed with VSCO with hb2 preset

A few things that kept Poppy busy during the flight: tearing apart the inflight magazines, her books, and FOOD. Food was very important because the flight was at 9:15am and she usually has nursed and eaten breakfast by this point. I decided to stop nursing her in the morning this day actually! (Now I only nurse her at night). We were on a time crunch and needed to get out of the house. I was worried that she would be sad but actually she was perfectly fine eating her cereal snack on the way to the airport instead… I’M OK, kinda. I am so proud of her and she’s a lot happier (and less cranky because she wants food instantly after nursing) getting a snack in the morning rather than nursing. During takeoff I had her drink water from her cup with a straw and on the way down she sucked on a puree pack. You can puree your own food but then you’d have to keep it cold. I bought some that are shelf stable until opened. There are so many amazing organic brands out there giving you plenty of options. I brought a handful on the trip to give her when food wasn’t as available. Also, this little narwal snack cup was a huge hit with her. I brought a large ziplock baggie of Kamut Puff Cereal and would refill her snack cup throughout the entire trip. So nice for her to have on the plane, in her carseat, and in the olive groves!

Now onto the good stuff, the Cobram Estate olive oil tasting room! We landed in beautiful Sacramento and went straight to business. While my mom was on Poppy duty (thanks mom!) I was able to see the olives fresh off the truck from the olive groves go straight into the process of becoming Cobram Estate extra virgin olive oil. Now this is art! The way Cobram Estate cares for their olive oil is unreal. Their process runs 24/7 during the olive harvest to ensure that their olive oil is as fresh as it can be. They have machines that ensure only the freshest olives make it into their oil! Tree to table with a quick pit stop at their olive mill.

Processed with VSCO with hb2 preset

I could tell right away that their olive oil team means business. These people LOVE olive oil and care about the entire process. Some are even certified olive oil sommeliers! We got to watch their machines sort the olives, extract into fresh olive oil that we tasted right from the spout. How about that for a fresh taste test?

After learning about their olive oil process (and wearing my new favorite look) we got to learn about the differences in olive oils and the polyphenol levels. (Polyphenols decrease heart disease risk factors by lowering blood pressure and cholesterol, reducing blood clotting and improving the health of artery linings.) This is super important: the less processing the better. “Extra virgin” olive oil, which is cold-pressed only once, has the highest polyphenol levels. Two presses (“virgin” olive oil), reduces polyphenol content further, and oil with three extractions contains only about half the value of “virgin” olive oil. Highly refined or “light” olive oils, which use heat or chemicals in the refining process, have significantly lower polyphenol levels. Cobram Estate ONLY bottles extra virgin olive oil. Think of extra virgin olive oil as fresh olive juice. The quicker you use the oil the better the oil is for you. Cobram Estate recommends using their oil within four weeks after opening to ensure the best taste and benefits. I used some the other day in a paleo olive oil chocolate chip cookie recipe. Extra virgin olive oil and dark chocolate, DOUBLE THE YUM.

From the tasting room we went to their olive fields and I felt like I was in a fairy tale. There were rolling hills beyond the eye could see of olives waiting to become Cobram Estate extra virgin olive oil. We got to ride the harvester, a large machine that picks the olives, and eat the most wonderful dinner featuring all the ways to use Cobram Estate EVOO right in the middle of all the action. We ended the evening with an olive oil carrot cake with an olive oil frosting. Never too much olive oil if you ask me!

Day two we were in Napa and had the morning to ourselves. We did a little exploring and found the best park across from our hotel. This was such a special trip to have my mom and Poppy with me! We’ve never spent this much time together just the three of us. I know my mom and I will cherish this trip forever. We’ll have to show Poppy all the photos and videos so she can remember too!

After lunch I made my way to the Rutherford House for the big cook off! We were paired with local chefs to create a special dish using Cobram Estates EVOO. We were surrounded by wilderness and rows of grape vines that truly set the tone for an epic evening. I was paired with Jodie and her brother Sam and we made the BEST citrus olive oil cake topped with charred pear. Cobram Estate EVOO is perfect for every recipe, their extra virgin olive oil is great for roasting, drizzling, grilling, baking, frying, dipping, sauté-ing, making salad dressings, and dessert! There really is no wrong way to use their olive oil.

Since sharing is caring, I’ve teamed up with Cobram Estate to give one of you and two friends the chance to win a bottle of their First Harvest 100% California extra virgin olive oil ($50 value!) for all your cooking needs. San Diego Staycation

When someone asks for a sip of your oat milk cold brew. Sorry, didn’t hear you!

Processed with VSCO with hb2 preset

WHAT A WEEKEND. On Saturday we had a little staycation here in San Diego and it was just what our family needed. Both Joel and I have been insanely busy this entire year. Between his full time school schedule, his job, my job, and the job of being parents, we have felt burnt out. We have always loved traveling and going new places together. We bounced around the idea of where we should go and what would be best for Poppy. We came to the conclusion that a staycation just made the most sense. Poppy would get to nap in her crib, we weren’t spending money on a hotel, and we wouldn’t have to find a sitter for Aero. I am so happy we played tourist for the day! Started our morning at Ranch 45 for breakfast, swipe right to see our spread! Everything can be made gluten free at Ranch 45 which is pretty cool. Made our way to Powerhouse Park in Del Mar for a little swing sesh for Poppy, stopped for a quick bite at Beaming, Poppy napped at home while we worked out, went to the beach in Carlsbad, and grabbed dinner to go at the new Mendocino Farms in Bressi Ranch. If you’re itching for a little weekend adventure but don’t want to go far, try a staycation in your one town. You’re sure to find hidden gems that you didn’t know were there.

Our Ranch 45 breakfast spread: gluten free seasonal berry pancakes, avocado toast with poaches eggs, a corned beef hash, and scrambled eggs and berries for Poppy. Not sure what was in those eggs but Poppy devoured them faster than I have ever seen her eat eggs!

What would you choose out of our breakfast spread? Those pancakes were insanely good, just sayin.

When it’s pumpkin season but you live in San Diego.

Grab your pumpkin latte, Pumpkin Pie Perfect Bar, and your bathing suit because pumpkin season in San Diego means another month and a half of beach days. It did drop to 75°F last weekend so maybe a light sweater too. Pumpkin Pie Perfect Bar is here (only for a limited time) and I could literally jump for joy. I wondered if Poppy would enjoy the Pumpkin Pie Perfect Bar as much as me and then she ate the entire bar in one sitting. I guess that means no more sharing because she wants the entire bar every time now. I don’t blame her! What’s not to love about pumpkin pie in a bar form with no baking required?

Head to perfectsnacks.com to find them in a fridge near you. Have you tried the Pumpkin Pie Perfect Bar before? #perfectaspie

#WhatRobinFavors – August Top Five!

Poppy’s birthday month is coming to an end and I’m feeling pretty good about it. It’s true what they say, the days are long but the years are short. The most important thing that I have learned this last year is to take proper “me time”. Remember that “me time” looks different for everyone! My weekly spin class at Rush Cycle is my “me time”. Spinning makes me feel like myself and reminds me that I am strong no matter what stage of life I’m in. I felt strong in spin class pre pregnancy, while I was pregnant (I took Flywheel classes all throughout my pregnancy and even a class the day before I delivered Poppy!), and even more so postpartum. I’m not saying you need to take up spinning, even though it might change your life. I’m encouraging you to find something that empowers you and makes you feel darn good because you deserve it.

Food: Homemade gluten free blueberry pancakes. These have been a huge hit for the entire family. I make a big batch to freeze and sometimes blend in some kale/spinach for an added veggie boost. These gluten free pancakes are great to dice up and stick in a stasher bag to bring with me for on-the-go snacks for Poppy. I know a lot of mom’s like O’s for their baby but I’m terrified Poppy will choke so these are nutritious and soft. Click here for the recipe!

Drink: PEANUT BUTTER COLD BREW. I talk about this drink on the daily over on @WhatRobinEats but it continues to be my favorite drink ever. I used powder peanut butter but you can totally use regular peanut butter or another nut butter of choice. I’ve been wanting to change it up by adding tahini but I just love the peanut butter flavor so much. Maybe September will bring the tahini to the mix? That’s a big maybe. Click here for the recipe!

Exercise: I recently started back on the stairmaster once every week and I’m really feeling it in my glutes! Besides spin, the stairmaster has always made me feel challenged but good. I like to do intervals and switch up my steps by skipping a step every other minute and stepping sideways and backwards. Be careful and don’t be afraid to hold on! Better safe than sorry until you get the hang of it. My goal is usually 20-30 minutes on the stairs depending on how sweaty I want to get that day.

Item to wear: I have been obsessed with my A New Day Sophia Strappy Slide Sandals from Target. I literally wear them with EVERYTHING. Sporty, dressy, pajamas, they go with my entire wardrobe. I’m not sure if Target still sells them but click here to see if they are in stock. If not, check Poshmark to see if someone is crazy enough to not love these and sell them to you.

Favorite of Poppy’s: Norah’s Shops bows. I’m always afraid head pieces are cutting off Poppy’s circulation. Am I squeezing her brains out just for fashion?! Norah’s Shop bows have never given me this nervous feeling. These were a gift from the owner and I refuse to put any other bows on her head! Easy to wash and she has yet to rip them off when wearing them. I’ll vouch for Poppy and say they are pretty comfy. Click here for her shop!

And that is it for August! I welcome September with open arms and a belly ready for all things pumpkin spice.

Poppy’s First Birthday Party, #MOO.

Processed with VSCO with hb2 preset

Poppy is ONE and I could cry all over again thinking about her birthday party last Saturday. I still slightly feel “hungover” from all the anticipation of her party, baking/decorating all 30 cupcakes and a mini cake for Pops, and decorating her big day. Or maybeeeee it was all the cold brew.

IMG_9161.jpeg

Her party theme was “cow” but not so much cowgirl. A lot of prints were red when I was searching for cowgirl party supplies and I had been envisioning more pink with cow print. I did a mixture of cow print straws, pink table settings, wooden forks, cow print cupcake liners,  “ONE” cake topper, the most adorable cupcake toppers on amazon with PINK cowgirls, boots, and horseshoes, and “MOO” cupcake toppers. Poppy enjoyed wearing her cow print Bapron and playing with the cow cake topper from the cowgirl cake topper set. Oh, I don’t want to forget to mention the COLD BREW BAR. This was a last minute decision but I couldn’t imagine a one year old birthday party without cold brew for the adults. I picked up a bunch of random things from Marshall’s and a guest let us borrow her Crate and Barrel drink dispenser for the cold brew. Thanks again Lauren for the demand, I mean request. 😉

A few outfit details:

Poppy’s outfit- White jumpsuit is an oldie from Baby Gap, Cow Bapron (looks sold out but I found some on Etsy), and a white Norahs Shop bow.

My outfit- ASOS petite pink gingham dress (I’m 5’8″ and I really like where this petite size dress hits right below my knees instead of mid calf), Herschel Supply Co. belt bag, target strappy slide sandals, and Maya Brenner letter necklace.

Now for the good part, the EATS. We served Pizza Port pizza (five large Pizza’s served 26 adults and four children), a mixed green salad, watermelon, Siete chips (ranch and nacho to be exact), and cold brew I made with vanilla/mocha syrup on the side and Ripple vanilla plant based half & half. For dessert I made Lemon Poppyseed cupcakes and Chocolate cupcakes (both gluten free by Sweet Laurel) and a Chocolate “Smash Cake” from an Ebook I’m trying to get the name of for ya. For frosting I used Simple Mills Vanilla frosting for all cupcakes and Poppy’s cake. For the chocolate cupcake frosting I mixed in freeze dried blueberries that I crushed into powder. I added a few cutup blueberries to the top of her cake and that’s all she wanted at first. Ha ha! The mini cake stand is from the dollar section in the front of Target and her highchair is STOKKE.

I could go on and on about Poppy’s party but I’mma stop here. Pictures are by my sweet friend, Brenna Weeks! She’s the best and was Poppy’s first visitor in the hospital just four hours after she was born. Comment below what your ideal birthday smash cake flavor would be. Honestly I’d love a double chocolate cake. The more chocolate, the better!

#WhatRobinFavors – July top five

I may have not looked so chipper here if someone would have told me that my iced Aiya matcha latte would spill all over the floor ten minutes later. 😅 Good thing I had a whole pack of their to-go packets. Made a new one shortly after! 👏🏼

Processed with VSCO with hb2 preset

July favorites! 🥳 July was jam packed which made it difficult to choose just five things to share.

Food: Cauli-oat bakes, you probably could have guessed this one. I’ve been hooked on these bakes because they taste delicious and it feeds all of us! My top bakes have been my mixed berry cauli-oat bake and my cacao cauli-oat bake. I know adding riced cauliflower to oatmeal can weird some people out but I think it’s the best thing since sliced bread.

Processed with VSCO with hb2 preset

Drink: Iced matcha latte, Aiya matcha to-go packets have changed my matcha game. I love having these packets in my backpack for times when I’m out with Poppy and need a quick pick me up. You can add them to milk with manuka honey or simply mix with water! There is no wrong way to use these packets. Here’s how I’ve been enjoying my Aiya matcha recently: 1/2 cup nut milk, 1/2 cup filtered water, 1 tsp manuka honey, and one Aiya matcha to-go packet. Mix together and pour over ice. TOO EASY!

Exercise: Sprint intervals. I have been perfecting this sprint interval series for ten years! I used to think the only way to run on a treadmill was distance but then one day I started doing sprints and I never looked back! Here’s my series below (please note that this one was written for Joel and his speed preference. Go at your own pace and what you feel comfortable with):

– warmup jog for 3 minutes

– 7.2 jog one minute

– 8.6 sprint one minute

– 7.4 jog one minute

– 8.9 sprint one minute

– 7.6 jog one minute

– 9.2 sprint one minute

– 7.8 jog one minute

– 9.5 sprint one minute

– 8.0 jog one minute

– 9.8 sprint one minute

– 8.2 jog one minute

– 10.0 sprint one minute

Item to wear: Boy brow, how am I just finding out about this?! I’ve always really been into my brows. I’ve had big brows my entire life, except for that one time in eighth grade where I tweezed them down to pencil thin. Besides that my brows have always had a mind of their own and the Boy Brow by Glossier just made styling them so easy and flawless. I bought the brown shade and I can see myself buying this product for the rest of my life.

A favorite of Poppy’s: Lion stuffed animal from our zoo trip. If you’ve seen my Instagram stories then you know the lion I’m talking about. We went to the San Diego Zoo back in December and she gravitated towards this yellow lion in the gift shop. We couldn’t resist getting it for her and about a month ago she stated really loving it. She takes him everywhere and just recently started taking her naps with him. It’s so cute to see her hug her stuffed animal so hard. She really is the sweetest baby I know! I’m just wondering what do I do when he needs a wash… there are no care instructions on his tag.

Processed with VSCO with hb2 preset

And that’s July! I can’t wait to see what August has in store for us. It’s going to be just as jam packed I’m sure with Poppy’s first birthday being August 17th. Comment your favorite things right now below or any care instructions you have for a stuffed animal. Cheers!

#whatrobinfavors – June top five

Another month has flown by and I cannot believe it. As of yesterday, Poppy is TEN MONTHS old. You better believe I’m already planning her first birthday party because the closer it gets the more my brain becomes total mush. My sweet little gal is growing up!

IMG_1304.jpg

A new month means I have a new top five for my monthly series. I’m thinking of calling it #whatrobinfavors, thoughts? Shoutout to everyone who suggested names for this series, they were all so creative but this one stuck out to me most.

Food: Cinnamon Snickerdoodle Chocolate Chunk Oatmeal Cookies, do I even need to explain? I’ll be honest, I was SO bummed when I pulled these bad boys out of the oven. They were flatter than flat and I didn’t think they’d be worth tasting. Joel begged to differ and said they looked good to him so I let them cool to at least take one bite. At first bite my mouth was salivating and my tastebuds went straight to a bakery cookie I’ve had in the past. Lesson learned: don’t judge a cookie by it’s cover. Click here for the recipe!

Processed with VSCO with hb2 preset

Drink:  If you’ve been following me over on the gram then you know I’m hooked on my cold brew chagaccino. I had my first chagaccino at Alfred last month in LA and was really sad to know I couldn’t go to Alfred everyday to get one. After a couple test recipes I finally got it right! I might be biased but I think my Chagacchino is better than Alfred’s.😊

Processed with VSCO with hb2 preset

Exercise: When we left LA last year I was really bummed to be moving away from FlyWheel. I had been spinning at FlyWheel for the last four years and couldn’t imagine enjoying spin as much anywhere else. That is until I took a RushCycle class. I had heard great things about the class and all the instructors so I thought, “why not?!”. It’s free for your first ride so I wasn’t losing anything taking one class. Five minutes into the class I knew this was my new FlyWheel. RushCycle has a tech pack so you know your gear and speed, the ambiance during class is so fun with the blacklight feature, and the instructor was killing it! The workout was challenging but not too hard where you weren’t able to keep up. Anyone at any fitness level can step into RushCycle feeling confident that they will have a good workout. I now go four times a month and all the instructors I’ve taken are great. I highly recommend taking a RushCycle class at least once!

Item to wear: My postpartum body has been all over the place. A month postpartum I had lost a lot of my pregnancy weight (thank you breastfeeding!) but my hips had expanded a solid 2 inches from giving brith. I’ve been avoiding purchasing new jeans up until this last month. It felt so good to get rid of the jeans and jean shorts I’ve been holding onto because I really don’t see my hips going back anytime soon. If they ever do I’ll deal with that when the time comes, but I bought new Levi’s 501 high rise shorts last week! It feels SO nice to wear jean shorts that fit. If you’re waiting for the time to purchase new jeans/jean shorts, the time is now! Go to an outlet store or utilize apps like Poshmark. I’ve purchased three pairs of Madewell jeans for less than half the price on Poshmark and sold a lot of my clothes there too. You can shop my closet here!

A favorite of Pop’s: Bath time with Poppy is becoming so sweet as she grows but now that she’s growing her sink baths aren’t possible anymore. Joel did some googling and found the PRIMO EuroBath. It fits right in the tub and has a little section for 0-6 months and another section for 6-24 months. People have asked how we store if and we just leave it in our second bathroom tub. Poppy loves being able to sit up and play with her farm animal bath toys. She can stop growing now, k thanks.
